Last week we looked at a few of the habitats that exist around the world and tried to piece together why there are so many different types of habitats, or biomes, around the world. From the snow covered Antarctica, to the sweltering rainforests in Brazil and even the deserts surrounding the UAE, the world is truly a remarkable place.
Look at the videos below and see if you can see different environments and think about where in the world they may be. Use the atlases in class to help you identify the sections, and find out more about each part by researching the links given to you here, and the information passed on in class. What can you find out about our wonderful world? Websites to identify different habitats around the world.
Use the maps in your classroom and the photos shown below to complete your map in class.
Some children were asked to think about why it was hotter around the equator, and why there were polar regions high above and below it. This video below helps explain this..

Lego - WeDo - Cams from Peter Jones on Vimeo.
Mr Rawlings popped into Year 4 to give the children a greater understanding of how Cams work in preparation for our fantastic cams project based around endangered species. He showed us lots of different examples, including one he'd made himself as well as talking through how they work. Are you looking forward to creating your own? Have a look at the videos below to help you understand how to create your own, and see other peoples in action!
Most children thoroughly enjoy reading at home, away from the pressure of school and the learning environment where they can immerse themselves in a book and just enjoy the pleasure of reading or being read to. We are pleased to be sending home the latest Baker Books catalogue which has a wide range of carefully selected children’s books for you and your family to choose from. Another reason for ordering is that the school receives 20% of the total order value in free books so by purchasing your books from the catalogue you are also helping the school library. We hope you enjoy looking through the catalogue and choosing your books, it’s a great way to encourage the reading habit and broaden your child’s experience of reading. The leaflets from Baker Books Book Club will be distributed to each class this week. In order to be environmentally friendly, we have attached the order forms. If you wish to purchase any books please print off these forms. We will also have spare copies in the library if needed.
FUNFARE/BOOK ZONE
Please highlight the books you require on the downloadable order forms, not on the booklet itself. The price includes 20% postage. Keep the original coloured leaflet for your own reference. Put your order forms in a sealed envelope together with the exact money (cash in AED only please). Please ensure that your child’s name and class are clearly marked on each order form. Put your child’s name, class and the amount of cash (no cheques please) included on the outside of your envelope. Please bring your envelope to the Junior Library. There are also print copies of the order forms available in the Junior Library. PARENT ORDERS If any parent would like to order books without their child’s knowledge, please indicate clearly PARENT ORDER at the top of your form and on the front of the envelope and we will keep your books in the library for collection. It would also be helpful if you could add a mobile contact number. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come and see us in the Junior Library. Closing date for orders is Sunday, 1st November 2015. Please note NO orders will be accepted after the closing date. We were lucky enough to have Mr Leppard come to read to us in Year 4 today as part of our ‘Read to Us’ project. He came and read the beginning of ‘Skellig’ by British author David Almond. This was a favourite book of his and not only did he inspire us to get the book out of the library to read he said that he was going to keep his copy by his bed to read again!
Mr Leppard was very impressed with how well Year 4 listened and he could tell how much the children enjoyed having a story read to them. Mr Leppard enjoyed the experience too and has asked to be invited back again. Our pleasure Mr Leppard and thank you very much. Shamsa Al Sayegh (Y4S) created her very own Egyptian Death Mask at home, based on that of Tutankhamun, and shown in the pictures below. What stunning work!
Orlagh Traynor (Y4C) recently created a 3D Egyptian pyramid model with surrounding grounds! It took her approximately 2-3 days to construct and she thoroughly enjoyed the project! Well done, Shamsa and Orlagh on some amazing work from home! Double check your diaries to see when your lessons are, and remember to bring your full swimming kit into school!
