Today we celebrated the auspicious occasion of the 45th National Day and the children came to school in clothes representing the colours of the UAE flag or in National dress. We participated in a number of activities and events related to the UAE throughout the day and watched a fantastic assembly. Congratulations to all of the children who took part and the staff who worked so hard to create a fantastic day. A huge big thank you to all of our wonderful Y4 parents for sending in Arabic food and supporting your children with their array of clothes to celebrate the day. We discussed why we are proud of living in the UAE, see the comments below. Mrs BB "I am proud to call the UAE my home, I have lived here for over 15 years and met my wonderful husband here. I am proud of the amazing Emirati people, their unique heritage and culture and their openness and warmth to welcome me to their country". Mrs Mc Cabe "I enjoy living in the UAE because of the friendly people, tradition and safety. It is a vibrant country and I am happy to be part of it". Mrs R Lings "Having only lived in the UAE for a few months I am enjoying learning abut the culture and heritage." Mariam Y4Ruby said "I love that the UAE is tolerant and multicultural, as if we are in one colossal family, United like everyone is a tree or in a large forest growing together". Can you add why you are proud of living in the UAE or what you like about this wonderful country in the comments section. Year 4 were delighted to welcome Mr Kramer this afternoon, along with his 2 sons, Tom and James!
He read 'The Shrinking of Treehorn' - a book by Florence Parry Heide, illustrated by Edward Gorey and first published in 1971. The main character in the book was Treehorn, a young boy who begins shrinking in height after playing a strange board game! Thank you Mr Kramer - please come back again! In French, we have started a new topic of Les Habitats. We will be learning about the names of various habitats, animals and plants. This ties in to the fabulous theme of Endangered Species.
During our first lesson, we learnt the vocabulary for 5 elements that plants and animals need to survive. I then challenged the classes to act out these elements! With 4S, we even did a mannequin challenge! Saskia Eyck made a wonderful cake at home and brought it into school to decorate in cookery club with Mrs Moore and Mrs Popplewell. She decorated it in the spectacular colours of the UAE to celebrate the 45th UAE National day.
Jude Roberts and Fatema Al Ketbi in Year 4 Ruby were selected at random to take part in the International PE challenge against another school from Spain. Click on the image below to watch the video draw by Mr Mc Farlane.
Congratulations to them both, Jude achieved 91 ball throws and Fatema 60 in 2 minutes. Good luck to the both, watch out for the results coming soon! Year 4 has been so fortunate to welcome many parents who have come in to support our learning. This was done through presentations and talks.
A big thank you to Mrs Gordon for her insightful talk about lungs and their functions. Dr Khan for his informative presentation about the skeletal system and he was so impressed with the knowledge that the children had already! Also to Mrs Karajeh for her interactive discussion about the functions of the muscles and we benefited from her expertise as a physiotherapist. Mr Mahmoud who read us 'Little Red Riding Hood' in German and taught us some new German phrases. In addition, Dr Paryssa for helping us consolidate our knowledge of the bones and joints in the body! Will be held at The British School, Al Khubairat ON: November 20-21st from 7.30am to 4.00pm Year 4 have been looking at different organisms and trying to sort them out. We looked at the features of each one, and then asked questions with yes/no questions to sort them all out. Using questions like, 'does it move?', 'is it a vertebrate?' and 'is it a herbivore?' the children were able to sort out a range of plants and animals. It became more difficult when we added more animals and plants to the activity, but the children rallied round well to change their questioning and sort most of them out! There's a challenge below for anyone who thinks they've mastered classification by asking specific and targeted questions! Activity - Sort Them Out!What questions would you ask to sort out these animals below?
What makes them similar, different, or even unique? How would you ensure that your database was correct? Science Objectives

So after knowing the two bigger groups, we can then separate them into other groups, which essentially tell us what is SIMILAR about them. The websites below provide lots of examples of classification and how we can sort them out!
These videos give an idea of the different types, or species, of animals.
Which species of animal is missing in these sets of videos? Can you tell me something in the comments about them and what they are different to the other?
